A Few Words From the
Shinjo Kameayaori Traditional Culture Association:

Shinjo Kameayaori is a tradition born in Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture, and is referred to in historical records as "The Mythical Textile.” This twill-woven silk textile, referred to as ayaori, takes a considerable amount of skill to produce. It is highly rare, even within Japan, and we believe it is worth preserving and sharing with the world.

Presently, we have successfully restored and recreated more than 20 different weaving patterns once lost to history. Here at the Shinjo Kameayaori Traditional Culture Association, we believe that through passing down and improving upon the skills and techniques used to produce the beautiful and treasured Shinjo Kameayaori, we can prevent this traditional art from disappearing again.

To that end, we have begun improving the environment for our weavers, developed our brand with goods using Shinjo Kameayaori, diversified our sales channels, and continue to document our story to increase awareness of Shinjo Kameayaori throughout the world.

We are grateful and proud to be involved with Shinjo Kameayaori, and we will continue to work hard day-by-day in order to ensure that one of Japan’s most beautiful textiles is preserved for generations to come.

About Educational Sessions, etc.

We once conducted flat-weave hiraori weaving experiences using thick yarn and cotton threads on a tabletop loom, however we have since discontinued these events. However, if you would like to tour our workshop and facilities, please call ahead or fill out our contact form to schedule.
